This spectacle case was popular and widely available throughout the 1800s. The three piece design was made of steel, tin or "German silver", an inexpensive alloy composed of varying amounts of copper, zinc and nickel that was sometimes mistaken for real silver. The flip-top lid was held closed by friction.
 Our model is fully lined tin-plated steel, offering the strength and durability of steel with the quality look of German silver. Over time the finish will dull and develop a patina as did the originals and the friction closure lid, initially a bit snug, will break in and work smoothly.
Manufacturing of this style case ceased in the 1860s, due to the 1860 Parker Patent and subsequent mass production by Parker of inexpensive tin cases, although usage of this case continued well into the end of the century. 

Original cases of this type often contained the name of the owner or presentation information engraved on the top lid.
